Background: Sinusitis, characterized by inflammation of paranasal sinuses, is a global health concern. Despite its prevalence, regional awareness variations exist, necessitating targeted studies. This research explores sinusitis awareness in District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, considering geographical, climatic, and cultural influences. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey (July-Oct 2023) involved 400 adults residing in District Shimla for ≥12 months. A Google form assessed demographics and sinusitis knowledge (20 questions, maximum score 20). Descriptive statistics, including frequencies and percentages, were employed. The study design incorporated expert-validated tools, ensuring data reliability. Results: Among participants, 80.3% had heard of sinusitis, yet understanding varied (71.8%). Common symptom recognition was notable (72.3%), but awareness of sinusitis types (63.3%) indicated room for improvement. Climate and altitude impact awareness (61.3%), showcasing geographical nuances. Participants acknowledged cultural practices (67.0%), emphasizing cultural competency. Barriers to information dissemination (68.0%) were identified, indicating community-specific challenges. Respondents recognized the need for awareness campaigns (74.5%) and displayed good awareness of preventive measures (59.3%). Conclusion: The study unveils a commendable baseline awareness of sinusitis in District Shimla, alongside identified gaps. Leveraging cultural competencies, addressing barriers, and emphasizing preventive measures emerge as crucial strategies. This study envisions an empowered community actively engaged in health, contributing to the broader narrative of public health in the Himalayan heartland.
Sinusitis, a prevalent medical condition characterized by inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, poses a significant health concern globally. The paranasal sinuses, namely the frontal, ethmoidal, sphenoidal, and maxillary sinuses, play a crucial role in respiratory function and overall well-being. When these sinuses become inflamed, it can lead to a range of symptoms, including nasal congestion, facial pain, and headaches. In the context of District Shimla, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, understanding the awareness levels among the general population regarding sinusitis becomes imperative [1-3].
Despite the widespread prevalence of sinusitis, there is a notable lack of comprehensive studies focusing on the awareness levels within specific regions, such as District Shimla. The current study aims to bridge this gap by assessing the extent of awareness about sinusitis among the diverse demographic of this district. The findings of this research will not only contribute to the existing body of knowledge on sinusitis but will also serve as a foundation for public health initiatives and educational campaigns tailored to the unique needs of the Shimla population.Several factors contribute to the relevance of this study. Firstly, the geographical and climatic conditions of Himachal Pradesh, characterized by cold temperatures and varying altitudes, may influence the prevalence and understanding of sinusitis. Additionally, cultural practices, lifestyle choices, and healthcare accessibility within the district can significantly impact the awareness and management of sinusitis among the residents [3,4].
This study seeks to shed light on the current state of awareness about sinusitis in District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, contributing valuable insights to both the academic and public health domains. The outcomes of this research endeavor are poised to inform future healthcare policies, empower individuals to take proactive measures for sinusitis prevention, and pave the way for a healthier and more informed community in the heart of the Himalayas.

Study Population
The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of District Shimla for a minimum of 12 months
Sample Size
A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding Sinusitis, their symptoms and treatment options, a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate.
Study Tool
A google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding Sinusitis, their symptoms and treatment options was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents.

The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more.
Questionnaire
The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding Sinusitis, their symptoms and treatment options. One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80% (16-20) = very good, 60-79% (12-15) = Good, 41-59% 8-11) = Fair, <40% (< 8) = poor

Data Collection
Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected.
Data Analysis
Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage.
Ethical Considerations
Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained.
The main focus of this study was to assess the comprehension of Sinusitis, including their symptoms and available treatment options, within the general population of District Shimla. The study involved 400 participants, with 256 (64%) living in urban regions and 144 (36%) in rural areas.

In the present study 26.75% (107) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards Sinusitis, their symptoms and treatment options, 33.75% (135) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 27.5% (110) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 12% (48) having poor knowledge (<8 marks).
The results of our study provide valuable insights into the current state of awareness about sinusitis among the general population of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The findings highlight both strengths and areas for improvement in the knowledge levels regarding sinusitis, its symptoms, and treatment options.
The majority of participants (80.3%) reported having heard of sinusitis, indicating a reasonably high level of general awareness in the district. This finding aligns with studies conducted in other regions, such as the work by Smith et al., where 75% of participants were familiar with the term "sinusitis" [5].
While a significant portion acknowledged awareness, the understanding of what sinusitis entails was reported by 71.8% of participants. This suggests that there is room for improvement in clarifying the nuances of sinusitis, mirroring findings from a similar study in rural India [6].
The study revealed a commendable recognition of common symptoms associated with sinusitis, with 72.3% of participants able to name them. However, a notable proportion (63.3%) was aware of the different types, such as acute and chronic sinusitis. This underscores the need for targeted educational interventions to enhance awareness, similar to findings in studies conducted in diverse settings [7]. Participants displayed a moderate awareness of factors influencing sinusitis, including climate, altitude, and potential causes such as infections and allergies. The impact of geographical and climatic conditions on sinusitis awareness is consistent with studies conducted in regions with similar environmental characteristics [8].
A significant portion of participants (74.5%) expressed the need for more public awareness campaigns about sinusitis in Shimla. This aligns with studies emphasizing the importance of disseminating healthcare information to improve accessibility and encourage individuals to seek medical advice [9].
A noteworthy finding was that 67.0% of participants were aware of cultural practices or local remedies related to sinusitis in the Shimla district. This aspect highlights the influence of cultural factors on health perceptions and aligns with studies emphasizing the importance of cultural competency in healthcare [10].
The identification of challenges and barriers by 68.0% of participants underscores the importance of tailoring awareness campaigns to address specific community concerns. Studies have emphasized the need to address community-specific barriers for effective health communication [11].
Participants demonstrated a relatively good understanding of preventive measures (59.3%) and the impact of lifestyle factors on sinus health (67.3%). This aligns with studies emphasizing the role of education in promoting preventive behaviors and healthier lifestyles [12].
In the picturesque expanse of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, our study uncovered a commendable baseline awareness of sinusitis among the general population, albeit with discernible gaps in understanding. While familiarity with the term prevailed, nuances regarding types and underlying causes surfaced as focal points for improvement. The community's nuanced awareness of symptoms and cultural practices presents a unique cultural competency to leverage in targeted awareness campaigns. Importantly, the study identified specific challenges and barriers, signaling the necessity for community-specific approaches in health communication. The community's expressed need for more awareness campaigns and the recognition of preventive measures underscore a readiness for proactive health engagement. This study not only paves the way for tailored interventions to refine sinusitis awareness in Shimla but envisions a future where residents are empowered participants in their health journey, contributing to the broader narrative of public health in the heart of the Himalayas.
