Abstract

Banking in Indonesia is now increasingly competitive with the existence of Islamic Banks that offers financial and investment products in a different way than the Bank Conventional that has been around for a long time. Although still considered a newcomer, Islamic banking is growing quite fast. This is understandable by looking at the country of Indonesia is one of the countries with the largest Muslim population throughout the world. To maximize the market share and potency of Islamic banks, this study aims to see whether lifestyle and Islamic financial literacy can help people in using Islamic banking or Islamic Banking products. This study uses quantitative methods. The sample in this study amounted to 100 respondents obtained by probability sampling method with simple random sampling technique. The data obtained were processed using multiple linear analysis techniques. The results of the analysis in this study indicate that (1) the Islamic financial literacy variable has a positive and significant effect on decisions to use Islamic banking products (2) lifestyle variables have a positive and significant effect on decisions to use Islamic banking products.

INTRODUCTION

Press release from KKNEKS said that the government plans to make Indonesia the center of the world's Islamic economy by 2024 [1]. According to a report from The Islamic Corporation for the Development (ICD) and The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) to measure industrial development Islamic finance, which is also a barometer of the soundness of the Islamic finance industry. IFDI reported that there are several instrumental factors grouped into five development areas, which are considered as the main indicators, namely Quantitative Growth, Knowledge, Governance (Governance), Awareness (Awareness), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The Islamic Finance Awareness indicator is also an important factor in improving the ranking Indonesia. One of the strategies for the development of the Islamic finance industry is the development of Islamic financial services [2].

Satan explain in Sari & Abdullah Islamic financial institutions were established three decades ago as an alternative to conventional financial institutions mainly to provide compliant investments, financing, and trading opportunities. The Islamic financial institutions school of thought can be investigated from 1500 B.C with the advent of Islam and teaching of Quran. But it is gaining global importance and emerging as an alternative to interest based economic system. Sari also states islamic finance is effectively an industry that is broadening its ownership base and building a strong value proposition for it to reach wider acceptance and richer value. According to Malkawi, more than 500 Islamic financial institutions are operating worldwide, which are claimed to manage assets worth no less than $1.2 trillion.

Islamic bank is one part of Islamic financial services. Currently, Islamic banks are one of the main indicators of the development of Islamic economics in Indonesia. The development of Islamic banks according to Financial Services (OJK) has fluctuated. After experiencing relatively high growth in previous years, in 2013-2014 Islamic banking faced challenges in the form of slowing growth. There are several factors that encourage the growth of the Islamic banking industry, such as conversions carried out by several regional policies, the enactment of sharia regulations. In addition, the trend of increasing the halal lifestyle industry is a number of factors that are factors for the growth of Islamic banking (https://www.c nbcindonesia.com/syariah)

Based on the results of the Financial Services Authority (OJK) report in the Indonesian Sharia Banking Growth Snapshot, the national Islamic finance market share until April 2020 reached 9.03%, an increase from the previous year in 2019, which was 8%. This growth can be seen from the growth in the number of customer accounts every year. This shows that the awareness of the Indonesian people has begun to grow to choose Islamic banking as a financial institution that will store and manage their finances properly and in accordance with sharia principles. However, the number of Islamic banking customers is still small. If you look at the Islamic banking market share of 9.03%, this growth is not as expected by the government. The growth that occurs in Islamic banks is not much better than the increase in market share of Islamic banks themselves. According to Kusumadewi et al. [3], one of the factors to be able to increase the market share of Islamic banks is to increase Islamic financial literacy. By understanding the Islamic financial literacy of the community will understand and use Islamic bank products

Survey from the results of the National Literacy Survey Finances 2019 show that community sharia financial literacy index Indonesia is in the position of 8.93%, while the conventional financial literacy index has reached the position of 38.3%. This matter provide a portrait of the state of literacy Where is the finance in Indonesia the people do not fully own sufficient knowledge of how optimize money for activities that productive. In West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), survey shows the level of sharia literacy in NTB is still classified as low, which only reached 22.05%. While conventional financial literacy in NTB has reached 34.65%. Where public understanding or knowledge Islamic finance in NTB is still classified as low. Knowledge of financial institutions sharia will play an important role in the interest society, because there is a very close correlation that more and more people are have high knowledge of Islamic financial management can be great opportunity to increase interest community in using the products Islamic financial institutions. Therefore, literacy finances will be closely related to decisions people to use the product Syariah banking

Research conducted by Liana [4] with the title “The Influence of Islamic Financial Literacy and Sharia Governance on Student Decisions in Using Sharia Banking Services” concluded that if there is an increase in Islamic financial literacy there is also an increase in student decisions in using Islamic banking services. Then the research conducted by Handida & Sholeh [5] with the title “The Influence of Knowledge Level, Service Quality, and Islamic Financial Literacy Level on Decision Making Muslim Community Using Islamic Banking Products in the Region Special Yogyakarta” concluded that Islamic financial literacy is feasible positive impact on Muslim community decision making using Islamic banking products. Based on the previous one can explain with high financial literacy sharia will trigger community decision-making on his choice of Islamic banking so that it does not will also directly increase the market share of Islamic banking.

Ismanto, et al, argue that financial literacy is related to with individual abilities, skills in managing finances can also be referred to as triggers of awareness, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and eliciting behaviors are important for making financial decisions healthy and ultimately achieve individual financial well-being. Not only that, according to Hung et.al, Glaser and Weber, financial literacy will affect a person indeciding a financial behavior.  Ulya mentions that the right strategy was needed to increase people to use of Islamic Banks, one of which was by understanding customer behavior. Also, Rusydiana and Hasib  agrees the target market share of sharia banks that was not reached was a separate phenomenon to evaluate how effective the sharia bank's strategy was in understanding its customers and prospective customers.

Customer behavior on decision are very important element for determine the bank's growth in order to continue to exist in the face of competition. Kotler states that consumer behavior is influenced by various factors, namely culture, social class, family, status, group/community, age, occupation, lifestyle and others. Factors can provide good service to buyers in this case an individual consumption in using Islamic bank products.  One factor internal factor that influence decisions buying is a lifestyle. Moreover Sangadji explain that lifestyle is a one of the factors that can influence consumer's decision to consume or choose a product. Next argues that lifestyle is based on society thoughts, beliefs and attitudes towards society. These attitudes, mindsets, and beliefs have a significant impact on the decisions people make whether these decisions relate to their personal lives or their professional lives. They also argue everyday decisions are also influenced by lifestyle. Therefore, it is an important aspect for marketing manager of the banks to analyze the lifestyle of targeted market consumers for successful islamic bank’s products that increases the likelihood of increasing customer. It is found by the study of  Solomon et al. there are differences between attitudes and buying behavior of men and women. The study of Herawaty et al. [6] considered lifestyle reflects an entire people that interact with their environment. Lifestyle has an influence on someone's behavior that in the end, it decides someone's consumption choice. Research performed by Kavak and Gumusluoglu [7] in the capital of Ankara, Turkey, recognized consumer behavioral features prejudiced the life style factors and thirteen lifestyle scopes. Beside, lifestyle was very important not only to study consumer behavior in common however it is also very significant in worldwide marketing owing to its huge impact on the day by day purchasing choices by each individual

Based on the above background, the existence of a research gap from research previously this study aims to identify whether there was an effect of between literacy and lifestyle on decisions taking Islamic bank products in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). In other words, this study aims to answer the following research questions: First, how is the effect of islamic financial literacy to decision using islamic bank product? Second, how is the effect of lifestyle to decision using Islamic bank product?

Some of the current research findings are consistent with the findings of previous studies and some findings contradict the findings of previous studies. Understanding whether Islamic financial literacy and lifestyle influence consumer decisions to use Islamic banks is important for Islamic bank stakeholders because of this determine how and to what extent customers choose to subscribe bank products and services.

Theoretical Framework and Hypothesis

Lusardi and  Mitchell argue that financial literacy means people’s ability to process economic information and make an informed decision about financial planning, wealth accumulation, debt and pensions. The level of financial literacy owned by each person is different. The difference of those financial literacy level that causes a significant difference between individuals with the other in collecting both short and long terms asset. Financial literacy explains a wide of these saving as well as some borrowing decision Grohmann [8]. Knowledge of financial literation will play an important role to public interest, because there is a very close correlation that more and more people have high knowledge about financial literation can be a great opportunity for increase public interest in using products Islamic financial institutions. Financially literate individuals make better use of advanced financial product. The higher financial literacy leads to improve financial decision making.

Research from, in their work, which staid that the level of knowledge, service quality, and level of Islamic financial literacy positive and significant influence on community decisions Muslims use Islamic banking products. Similar Dwi Research about the impact of financial literacy training on decision Islamic Bank product, identify enhanced financial literacy as one of the important factors explaining the behavioural change. Then the research that has been carried out by conclude that if there is an increase in Islamic financial literacy then there is also an increase in student decisions in using Islamic banking services.

Research conducted several studies [9-11] found that financial literacy has a positive positive effect consumer saving attitudes and behavior. Unlike Albaity and Rahman, [12], on the other hand hand, found that Islamic financial literacy is negatively related to the intention to use sharia banks, although they found that the more literate a customer was, the higher their attitude was towards Islamic banks.

Based on the description above, the hypotheses that can be used are:

  • H1: Islamic financial literacy affects decision using Islamic banking

Krishnan [13] explain lifestyle research is an important concept used in market segmentation and understand the target customer, which is not available in demographic studies . Lifestyle is one of the factors that can influence consumer decisions in consuming a product. Rina and Alimuddin  states that: Lifestyle is to show how people live, how to spend the money, and how to allocate time. It can be concluded that a sedentary lifestyle is a pattern of life that is expressed in activities, interests, and opinions in spending money and how to allocate time. Trimartati said that the factors that affect a person's lifestyle there are two factors which are derived factor from within the individual (internal) and factors that come from outside (external). Internal factors:

  • The attitude

  • Experience and observation

  • Personality

  • The concept of self

  • Motif

  • Perception

The external factors include the group 1) Reference 2) Family. According to the study Joseph Plumer (1974) said segmentation lifestyle measure of human activities in terms of:

  • Activities

  • Interest

  • A person's image of self and others

  • The basic characters

Fauzan [14] in his research says that lifestyle which includes factors of activities interest, and opinion has a strong and positive relationship to the decision to use Islamic banking. Nasrul  stated in his research that lifestyle significantly influences decisions, as well as Fautngiljana et al. [15]  in his research that lifestyle influences significantly positive and significant. However, something different was stated by Widiatmoko et al.  in his research that lifestyle has no effect significantly to the decision.

Based on the previous research, the hypotheses that can be used are:

  • H2: Lifestyle influences the decision to use Islamic banking

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Research Design

This type of research is quantitative with the Associative approach, the approach quantitative can be interpreted as a method research used to examine the specific population or sample, technique sampling is obtained by certain considerations, data collection using research instruments, data analysis is a quantitative approach with the aim of to master the established hypothesis. Associative Approach is a research that aims to knowing the relationship between two or more variables. In this study, the method associative is used to describe the effect of applying Islamic financial literacy and lifestyle to decisions using Islamic banking.

Sampling Technique

The sample to be used is selected through Non-Probability Sampling with technique Purposive Sampling. The sample used in this study is part of the population that has been determined by the researcher. The sample taken is people who use Islamic banking products in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). The amount of the sample on this research is 100 peoples

Data Analysis Techniques

The analytical method used in this study is multiple linear regression analysis, which is an analysis to test the effect of two or more independent variables on the dependent variable. In regression analysis there are several assumptions that must be met so that the resulting regression equation will be valid if used to predict a problem: classic assumption test (normality test, heteroskedasticity test and multicollinearity test) and hypothesis test.

Data Analysis and Discussion

Classic Assumption Test

Normality Test: In this study, the normality of the data was tested using the Kolomogrov-Smirnov test with a significance number >0.05. The data can be said to be normally distributed if the results of the Kolomogrov-Smirnov test exceed the significance number. The following are the results of the normality test in this study.

From the data above, it can be seen that the value of Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) in this study is 0.248 greater than the significance level of 0.05. So, it can be concluded that the data in this study are normally distributed.

ulticollinearity TestMulticollinearity test aims to test whether the model regression found a correlation between independent variables (independent variables). The following are the results of the multicollinearity test in this study. The indication of multicollinearity is when the VIF limit >10 and Tolerance <0.10 then multicollinearity occurs. From the data above, it can be seen that all independent variables escaped the multicollinearity problem.

Heteroscedasticity TestHeteroscedasticity test aims to test whether in the regression model the variance inequality from one observation to another is fixed, it is called homoscedasticity and if it is different it is called heteroscedasticity. The results of the heteroscedasticity test in this study are as follows:

Based on the results of the Glejser test after the data transformation in the table above, the significant value of all independent variables in this study is more than 0.05. From this, it can be concluded that there are no symptoms of heteroscedasticity in this research variable.

Multiple linear regression

Multiple linear regression analysis in this study was conducted to determine the effect of Islamic financial literacy and lifestyle on decisions to use Islamic banking. The following are the results of multiple linear regression analysis in this study.

Table 4: Multiple Linear Regression Test

Source: SPSS, 2021

Based on the table of linear regression test results above, the following regression equation is obtained:

Y = 4.649 + 0.264X1 + 0.234X2 + e

The results of the regression equation above, it can be concluded as follows:

  • The constant value of 4.649 indicates that if all the independent variables of Islamic financial literacy and lifestyle are assumed constant, then the value of the purchase decision is 4.649

  • The regression coefficient value of Islamic financial literacy variable (X1) is 0.264, this means that if the value of Islamic financial literacy increases by one unit, then the value of purchasing decisions will increase by 0.264

  • The value of the lifestyle regression coefficient (X2) is 0.234, this means that if the lifestyle value has increased by one unit, the value of purchasing decisions will increase by 0.264

Hypotesis Test

T test for Islamic Financial Literation (X1): Conducting the First t-test of Islamic Financial Literacy T test (Partial Test), which is to test whether the independent variables, individually affect the dependent variable. By seeing:

  • If the value of t arithmetic < t table then H0 is rejected, there is no effect and a significant value >0.05 then the hypothesis is rejected or the independent variable has no significant effect on the dependent variable

  • If the value of t count >t table then Ha is accepted, there is a positive effect and a significant value <0.05 then the hypothesis is accepted or the independent variable has a significant influence on the dependent variable

Based on the table of output coefficients above, it is known that the value of t calculate Islamic financial literacy (X1) of 2.330 > t table of 0.1660 meaning that there is a positive direction of Islamic financial literacy variable towards purchasing decisions (Y) and the significant value (sig) of the financial literacy variable is 0.022 < probability 0.05, it can be concluded that H1a or the first hypothesis is accepted, meaning that there is a positive influence of the Islamic financial literacy variable (X1) on the decision variable to use Islamic banking products (Y). ). This means that Islamic financial literacy has a positive and significant influence on decisions to use Islamic banking products.

  • Ha: Islamic Financial Literacy Has a Positive and Significant Effect on Decisions to Use Islamic Banking Products

T test for Life Style (X2)

Based on the table of output coefficent above, it is known that the t count of lifestyle (X2) is 2.426 > t table of 1.984. This indicates that there is an influence between lifestyle (X2) on purchasing decisions (Y) and the significant value (sig) of the lifestyle variable is 0.017. Because the value of sig. 0.017 <0.05, it can be concluded that H2 or the second hypothesis is accepted, which means that there is a positive effect. This means that lifestyle has a positive and significant effect on decisions to use Islamic banking products.

Ha: Lifestyle has a positive and significant impact on the decision to use Islamic banking products

Coefficient of Determination (R2)

The coefficient of determination in multiple linear regression analysis, in this study will measure how much (%) the influence of Islamic financial literacy variables (X1) and lifestyle (X2) on decisions to use Islamic banking products (Y).

Table 5: T Test

Source: SPSS, 2021

Table 6: Coefficient of Determination

Source: SPSS, 2021

Based on the output table in the summary model above, it is known that the coefficient of determination or R2 is 0.164. The value of R2 is derived from squaring the value of the coefficient of determination, namely 0.405 x 0.405 = 0.164. The magnitude of the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.164 or equal to 16.4%. This figure means that the variables of Islamic financial literacy (X1) and lifestyle (X2) affect the decision variable to use Islamic banking (Y) by 16.4%. While the rest (100%-16.4% = 83.6%) is influenced by external variables or variables that are not examined.

DISCUSSION

Based on the results of the analysis carried out, further discussion will be carried out on the results of the analyzed tests to find out more clearly whether the influence of Islamic financial literacy (X1) and lifestyle (X2) variables on decisions to use Islamic banking products (Y).

  • The influence of Islamic financial literacy on the decision to choose Islamic banking products

Based on the table of output coefficients in the t-test aboveit is known that the t-count value of Islamic financial literacy (X1) is 2.330> t table of 1.660, meaning that there is a positive direction of Islamic financial literacy (X1) on purchasing decisions (Y). And the significant value (sig) of the Islamic financial literacy variable is 0.022. Because the value of sig. 0.022< probability 0.05 then it can be concluded that the first hypothesis is accepted. Which means the higher the Islamic financial literacy or the knowledge the customer has, the higher the level of customer decision to use Islamic banking products.

Three indicators are used as evidence for statements in the questionnaire, namely: general financial knowledge, namely a person's ability or understanding of the general concepts of Islamic finance, financial attitude (financial attitude), namely awareness and confidence in finding sources of expenditure or financing and allocating or spending funds. Which is owned by the principle of halal, responsive financial behavior (financial behavior), namely one's ability to manage finances. Based on the results of the questionnaire from six statements regarding Islamic financial literacy to 100 respondents using a scale of 1-4, the average answer with a score of three on the indicator of Islamic financial literacy was stated in the questionnaire. Where the total average of the six statements is 3.22 based on the answers obtained for Islamic financial literacy, then the average answer is as follows:

  • In the first statement (mudharabah financing /profit sharing), with an average value of 3.36 This means that respondents agree with this statement

  • In the second statement (Islamic banks in carrying out their activities) its operations also use the principle of deposit or savings (Al-Wadiah) to provide convenience for customers, with an average value of 3.54 This indicates that respondents agree with this statement

  • In the third statement (Islamic banks also provide ijarah / leasing products for customers who want to do leasing activities), with an average value of 3.31 This states that the respondents agree with this statement

  • In the fourth statement (A good financial planning for the welfare of life in the future is to use services

  • Islamic banking), with an average value of 3.07 This is stated that the respondents agreed with this statement

  • In the fifth statement (I save in Islamic banks because the guarantee provided by the bank does not harm me), with an average value of 2.89. This states that respondents agree with this statement

  • In the sixth statement (I save in Islamic banks because the agreement given is favorable), with an average value of 3.18 This indicates that the respondents agree with this statement

From the average respondents' answers, it can be concluded that the result of the highest statement with an average value of 3.54 so that respondents agree with Islamic financial literacy has an influence on the decision to use Islamic banking products. The influence of Islamic financial literacy can be interpreted as a person's ability to use financial knowledge to manage their funds in accordance with sharia principles and implement them in Islamic financial attitudes and behavior in order to achieve prosperity in the future. One form of implementation of Islamic financial attitudes and behavior is to choose financing that is in accordance with sharia principles and decide to become a customer at a sharia bank that does not use the interest system. According to, the level of Islamic financial literacy can affect a person's attitude in financial behavior, especially in distinguishing between conventional financing and Islamic financing.

Islam allows its people to do muamalah or economic transactions to meet their needs and achieve prosperity. Economic transactions are allowed as long as there are no prohibited elements such as usury, gharar, maisir and other things, which can harm either party. NTB’s people who have a high level of Islamic financial literacy should be able to distinguish between financial products that are halal and do not contain elements of usury and financial products that are unlawful because they contain usury. The knowledge of Islamic finance owned by the community tends to influence the taking of financial attitudes that are in accordance with sharia principles and affect the interest of the NTB’s people to become customers of Islamic banks rather than conventional banks.

The results of this study are in line with research that has been carried out by Liana with the title "The Influence of Islamic Financial Literacy and Shariah Governance on Student Decisions in Using Islamic Banking Services" concludes that if there is an increase in Islamic financial literacy, there will also be an increase in student decisions in using Islamic banking services. Islamic banking services.

Lifestyle on Purchase Decision

Based on the output coefficient table in the t-test above, it is known that that the t value of lifestyle (X2) is 2.426 > t table of 1.660. This shows a positive direction of lifestyle (X2) towards the decision to use Islamic banking (Y) and the significant value (sig) of the lifestyle variable is 0.017. Because the value of sig. 0.017 <0.05, it can be concluded that Ha or the second hypothesis is accepted, meaning that there is a positive and significant influence of lifestyle (X2) on the decision to use Islamic banking products (Y).

There are 3 indicators that are used as evidence for statements in the questionnaire, namely: Activities, namely real actions taken such as buying halal products. Interest, namely the sense of interest determined by the individual to an object, both objects in the form of living and non-living objects. Opinion, which is verbal given in response to a situation. Based on the results of a questionnaire from six statements regarding lifestyle to 100 respondents using a scale of 1-4, the average of six statements, namely 2.99 based on the answers obtained for lifestyle, then the average answer is as follows:

  • In the first statement (Every time I buy a product, I always pay attention to the halal certification), with an average value of 3.00 This states that the respondents agree with this statement

  • In the second statement (I stay away from products and services that can contain elements of usury in them), with an average value of 3.36. stated that the respondents agreed with this statement

  • In the third statement (I am interested in saving in Islamic banks because of adequate facilities), with an average value of 2.97. This matter stated that the respondents agreed with this statement

  • In the fourth statement (politeness of Islamic bank employees encouraged my interest in saving in Islamic banks), with an average value of 2.80. This states that respondents agree with this statement

  • In the fifth statement (Islamic banks are popular among the public), with an average value of 2.70. This states that respondents agree with this statement

  • In the sixth statement (So far, Islamic banks have a good image), with an average value of 3.11. This states that the respondents agree with this statement

From the average respondents' answers, it can be concluded that the result of the highest statement with an average value of 3.36 so that respondents agree with the lifestyle that can influence the decision to use Islamic banking products. Respondents' assessment of all lifestyle indicators shows that most of the people of West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) can accept that Islamic banking products are in accordance with the lifestyle of the people of NTB. This means that most of the respondents have been able to accept that the application of an Islamic lifestyle in banking operations has been carried out correctly by Islamic banks. That Islamic banks in carrying out its activities has reached the essence of Islamic banking itself. Where respondents when buying products always see the halal certification and respondents always stay away from products that contain elements of usury in them. This condition will of course bring a good impression to Islamic banks, which were initially perceived as just banks that use Arabic terms in their products.

The results of this study are in line with Fauzan  in his research saying that lifestyle which includes factors of activities interest, and opinion has a strong and positive relationship to the decision to use Islamic banking. The results of this study are also in accordance with the theory "Lifestyle is one of the factors that can influence consumer decisions in consuming a product ".

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the data analyzed and the discussion that has been described in the previous chapter regarding the Influence of Islamic Financial Literacy and Lifestyle on Decisions to Use Islamic Banking Products, the sample used was 100 respondents from Islamic bank customers in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions can be drawn:

  • Islamic financial literacy is directly proportional to the decision using Islamic banking products, or Islamic financial literacy has a positive and significant effect on the decision to use Islamic banking products

  • Lifestyle has a positive and significant effect on decisions to use Islamic banking products

Suggestion

There are several suggestions in this study including:

  • In order to get a good research model supported by by a strong theory and it is recommended to reproduce more research references that are able to support the topic under study

  • The number of samples is increased in order to get better results, and the data obtained is more accurate
