Abstract
Background: Pancreatic cancer poses a significant global health challenge due to its aggressive nature and limited early detection methods. This study focuses on District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, India, aiming to assess and enhance awareness levels regarding pancreatic cancer. With healthcare disparities prevalent in the Indian subcontinent, understanding the region-specific knowledge gaps becomes imperative for effective preventive strategies. Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in District Kangra between August and October 2023. A sample of 400 adults residing in the district for at least 12 months participated. A Google Form questionnaire, covering socio-demographic information and pancreatic cancer knowledge, was utilized. The questionnaire underwent expert validation and was pre-tested for clarity. Knowledge scores were categorized into very good, good, fair, and poor. Data were collected online, entered into Microsoft Excel, and analyzed using Epi Info V7 software. Results: Participants exhibited commendable overall knowledge, with 29.75% having very good, 33% good, 23.5% fair, and 13.75% poor knowledge scores. While understanding of pancreatic cancer's nature, risk factors, and preventive measures was notable, awareness gaps were identified in screening methods and their frequency. Rural-urban diversity highlighted the need for tailored interventions. Conclusion: This study unveils the landscape of pancreatic cancer awareness in District Kangra, emphasizing strengths and areas for improvement. The findings contribute to the global discourse on pancreatic cancer awareness and underscore the importance of region-specific strategies. Targeted educational initiatives addressing identified gaps can enhance early detection and reduce the disease burden in the region.
