Depression- Lets’ Talk. A Cross Sectional Study among Undergraduate Nurses in a Metropolitan City of India

Background: Depression is a major public health threat that can affect anyone; with mental stress identified as a major risk factor. Nursing college is recognized as a stressful environment. Also stigma and myths are widely associated with mental illnesses which deter treatment and management. Aim: To assess depression among nursing students and to determine the perception of mental illness among them. Methods: A Cross sectionalstudy among 117 BSc. Nursing students from a Tertiary Care Hospital and Teaching Institute was done. Those enrolled and present at the time ofstudy who gave voluntary consent were included. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaire. Depression was assessed using Beck Depression Inventory and the perception of mental illness was discerned using a pre-tested questionnaire. Data was analyzed using appropriate statistical software. Results: The overall prevalence of depression in ourstudy is 50.43%. The most prominent symptom was feeling of guilt with prevalence of 65.81%. Suicidal thoughts were present in 32%. The general beliefs that mental disorders are rare, that ‘black magic’ or ‘evil spirit’ could cause mental illness and that persons with mental illness are a danger to the society were prevalent in as high as 61.5%, 43.6%, and 55.5% respectively. Conclusion: Prevalence of depression is high among nursing students and the perceptions about mental illness among study participants are in par with the general population. Our findings point to the importance of broad screening and psychiatric counseling and education of this vulnerable population.
