Mindful Movement: Assessing Physical Activity and Yoga knowledge among general public of District Shimla Himachal Pradesh

Abstract

Background: Physical activity and yoga play pivotal roles in promoting holistic health and well-being. This study assesses the levels of awareness and knowledge about physical activity and yoga among the residents of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, exploring their potential impact on community well-being. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between April and June 2023 among 400 adults residing in District Shimla for at least 12 months. A structured questionnaire assessed knowledge related to physical activity and yoga. Data were analyzed using Epi Info V7 Software, and ethical considerations were maintained. Results: The study revealed commendable awareness of physical activity's importance (79.5%), although only 47.25% were aware of recommended weekly activity guidelines. Approximately 66.75% practiced or knew of yoga's benefits, but awareness of different yoga styles (45.5%) and specific poses (33.75%) was lower. Notably, 82% believed schools should include physical activity and yoga in their curriculum, and 71.25% provided suggestions for increasing awareness. Conclusion: While foundational awareness exists, opportunities exist to enhance knowledge, particularly regarding guidelines, diverse yoga styles, and practical aspects. These findings inform targeted public health campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at nurturing a culture of mindful movement and improving overall well-being in Himachal Pradesh.

INTRODUCTION

Physical activity and yoga represent two integral components of holistic health and well-being, fostering a harmonious relationship between the body and mind. In the serene landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, a state nestled amidst the Himalayan splendor, the relevance of these practices in promoting overall health cannot be overstated. This study endeavors to illuminate the levels of awareness and knowledge concerning physical activity and yoga among the general population of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, unveiling their potential impact on the well-being of its residents [1-4].

 

Physical activity encompasses a spectrum of movements that engage the body's muscles, from brisk walking to more vigorous exercises. Engaging in regular physical activity is known to confer numerous health benefits, including cardiovascular fitness, weight management, and improved mental health. Additionally, yoga, an ancient discipline that combines physical postures, breath control, and meditation, has gained global recognition for its potential to enhance physical, mental, and emotional health. These practices share a common thread – the promotion of a balanced and mindful existence [5-8].

 

The significance of physical activity and yoga in preventing and managing various health conditions is well-established. Engaging in regular physical activity can reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Moreover, it plays a pivotal role in alleviating stress and anxiety, enhancing mood, and fostering cognitive well-being. On the other hand, yoga, with its roots in ancient Indian traditions, is celebrated for its capacity to enhance flexibility, strength, and mental clarity while reducing stress and promoting relaxation [9-12].

 

Despite the myriad benefits, the levels of awareness and knowledge about physical activity and yoga among the general populace remain variable, often influenced by cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic factors. The landscape and unique cultural diversity of Himachal Pradesh may offer an intriguing backdrop for understanding how these practices are perceived and integrated into the lives of its residents [13-16].

 

While research on physical activity and yoga abounds globally, a focused exploration of their awareness and knowledge within the context of Himachal Pradesh is still limited. Hence, the objective of this study is to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about physical activity and yoga among the general population of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. By uncovering the awareness levels, identifying prevalent misconceptions, and recognizing the sources of information, this research endeavor aims to provide valuable insights that can inform public health initiatives, healthcare policies, and educational campaigns tailored to the unique needs of Himachal Pradesh's diverse communities.

 

The findings of this study aspire to serve as a foundation for designing evidence-based public health campaigns, educational programs, and interventions that promote the adoption of physical activity and yoga as integral components of a mindful and healthy lifestyle. By illuminating the awareness and knowledge gaps related to these practices, we hope to contribute to the promotion of physical and mental well-being among the residents of Himachal Pradesh, nurturing a culture of mindful movement in the heart of the Himalayas.

 

Objectives of the Study

The objective of this study is to gauge the levels of awareness and knowledge about Physical Activity and Yoga among the general population of District Shimla Himachal Pradesh

MATERIALS AND METHODS
  • Research Approach: Descriptive

  • Research Design: Cross-sectional survey design

  • Study Area: District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh

  • Study Duration: Between April 2023 to June 2023

  • Study Population: The study's target population encompassed all adults aged 18 and above who had been residents of District Shimla for a minimum of 12 months

 

Sample Size

A robust sample size of 400 adults was determined using a 95% confidence level, an estimated knowledge level of 50% regarding Physical Activity and Yoga, a precise 5% absolute error margin, and a conservative 5% non-response rate

 

Study Tool

A google form questionnaire consisting of questions regarding socio-demography and knowledge regarding Physical Activity and Yoga was created. The questionnaire was initially pre-tested on a small number of participants to identify any difficulty in understanding by the respondents

 

Description of Tool

 

  • Demographic Data: survey instrument: The demographic form elicited information on participants’ background: age, marital status, religion, employment, education and many more.

  • Questionnaire: The questionnaire contains 20 structured knowledge related questions regarding Physical Activity and Yoga . One mark was given for each correct answer and zero for incorrect answer. The maximum score was 20 and minimum score was zero. Scoring was done on the basis of marks as >80% (16-20) = very good, 60-79% (12-15) = Good, 41-59% (8-11) = Fair, <40% (< 8) = poor

Data Collection

Data was collected under the guidance of supervisors. The google form questionnaire was circulated among the residents of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh for responses using online modes like e-mail and social media platforms like Whatsapp groups, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin till the 400 responses were collected. 

 

Data Analysis

Data was collected and entered in Microsoft excel spread sheet, cleaned for errors and analyzed with Epi Info V7 Software with appropriate statistical test in terms of frequencies and percentage.

 

Ethical Considerations

Participants confidentiality and anonymity was maintained.

RESULTS

The primary objective of this study was to gauge the understanding of Physical Activity and Yoga among the general population of Shimla. A total of 400 participants took part in the study, with 251 (62.75%) residing in urban areas and 149 (37.25%) in rural areas.

 

In the present study 33% (132) participants had very good knowledge (16-20 marks) towards Physical Activity and Yoga, 39.75% (159) had good knowledge (12-15 marks), 15.25% (61) had fair knowledge (8-11 marks) and 12% (48) having poor knowledge (<8 marks) (Table 1).

DISCUSSION

Physical activity and yoga are indispensable components of a healthy lifestyle, fostering physical fitness, mental well-being, and holistic health. This study delves into the levels of awareness and knowledge about physical activity and yoga among the residents of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, shedding light on their potential impact on the well-being of the community.

 

The study revealed that a substantial proportion of participants (79.5%) could explain what physical activity entails and why it is essential for overall health. This high level of awareness suggests that a significant section of the population understands the fundamental concept of physical activity and its relevance in maintaining well-being. However, when asked about the recommended amount of physical activity for adults per week, only 47.25% of respondents were aware of these guidelines. This finding underscores the need for disseminating information about recommended physical activity levels, which can serve as a practical guide for individuals to incorporate into their routines.

 

Approximately 57.75% of participants were aware of the various types of physical activities, such as aerobic, strength training, and flexibility exercises. This knowledge is crucial as it enables individuals to diversify their physical activity routines, thereby reaping a broader spectrum of health benefits. While 54.5% of respondents reported engaging in regular physical activity like walking, jogging, or sports, there is still a significant percentage of the population that may not be incorporating physical activity into their daily lives. Encouragingly, these findings indicate that a substantial proportion of the population is active to some extent.

 

A majority of participants (69%) could name some health benefits associated with regular physical activity. This knowledge is essential for motivating individuals to engage in physical activity, as they recognize the potential positive impact on their health. Concerning yoga, 66.75% of respondents reported having practiced yoga or heard about its benefits. Yoga's recognition as a holistic practice for physical and mental well-being is evident in these findings.

 

However, awareness of the different styles of yoga, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, or Ashtanga, was lower, with only 45.5% of participants being familiar with these distinctions. This suggests an opportunity for promoting a more in-depth understanding of yoga's diverse approaches and practices. Participation in yoga classes or sessions was reported by 36.25% of participants. While this number indicates engagement in formal yoga practices, there remains potential for increasing participation, given yoga's numerous benefits.

 

A noteworthy 58.75% of respondents were aware of the potential mental health benefits of practicing yoga, such as stress reduction and improved focus. Recognizing these benefits underscores the significance of yoga as a holistic practice that extends beyond physical fitness. In terms of specific yoga poses or asanas practiced for physical fitness, awareness was relatively lower, with only 33.75% of participants able to name some common poses. This finding suggests room for enhancing familiarity with the practical aspects of yoga.

 

Approximately 32.75% of respondents reported using fitness trackers or apps to monitor their physical activity levels. This reflects the integration of technology into health and fitness routines, enabling individuals to track their progress and stay motivated. A substantial 59.5% of participants were aware of local or traditional physical activities practiced in Himachal Pradesh that promote fitness. Additionally, 46.75% reported encountering cultural or community events related to physical activity or yoga. These findings highlight the region's rich cultural tapestry and its influence on physical fitness practices.

 

Encouragingly, 60.25% believed that physical activity can be enjoyable and integrated into daily routines. This positive perception can contribute to sustained engagement in physical activity. Understanding the barriers and challenges individuals face when trying to engage in physical activity or yoga is crucial. Approximately 59.5% of participants recognized specific obstacles, indicating the need for targeted strategies to address these challenges.

 

Incorporating mindfulness into physical activity and yoga practices was familiar to 49.25% of respondents. Awareness of mindfulness underscores its potential to enhance the benefits of these practices. While 38.5% of participants were aware of local resources or organizations that promote physical activity and yoga in Himachal Pradesh, there is room for greater awareness of such initiatives. Additionally, an overwhelming 82% believed that schools and educational institutions should include physical activity and yoga in their curriculum, emphasizing the importance of early exposure to these practices.

 

A substantial 71.25% of participants provided suggestions for increasing awareness and encouraging more people to adopt regular physical activity and yoga practices in Himachal Pradesh. These suggestions can serve as valuable inputs for community-level initiatives and awareness campaigns.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this study provides insights into the awareness and knowledge levels regarding physical activity and yoga among the residents of District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. While there is a commendable understanding of the fundamental concepts, there are opportunities for enhancing awareness of recommended guidelines, different styles of yoga, specific poses, and local resources. These findings lay the foundation for tailored public health campaigns, educational programs, and interventions aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being through physical activity and yoga. By addressing awareness gaps and fostering a culture of mindful movement, we can contribute to the overall health and quality of life of the people of Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the tranquil embrace of the Himalayas.
