Background: Anesthesia is a critical component of modern medical care, ensuring patient comfort and safety during surgical procedures. Despite its significance, public awareness and concerns regarding anesthesia remain underexplored, particularly in the distinct context of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. This study aims to assess the awareness and concerns surrounding anesthesia in this unique geographical and sociocultural setting. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, targeting adults aged 18 and above. A sample size of 400 participants was determined using a 95% confidence level and a 5% non-response rate. A Google Form questionnaire, comprising socio-demographic and anesthesia-related knowledge questions, was pre-tested and distributed through online platforms. Validity was ensured by expert review. Data were analyzed using Epi Info V7, and ethical considerations were prioritized. Results: Among the 400 respondents (57.5% male, 42.5% female), 65.5% demonstrated very good or good knowledge regarding anesthesia. While 83.75% understood the role of anesthesia in medical procedures, knowledge gaps were observed, emphasizing the need for targeted education. Over 64% expressed concerns about complications, highlighting the importance of addressing fears associated with anesthesia. Communication improvements were desired by 71.5% of participants. Conclusion: Residents of District Kinnaur exhibit commendable awareness of anesthesia; however, specific knowledge gaps and concerns necessitate targeted interventions. Tailored educational programs and enhanced communication strategies, as supported by previous Indian studies, are crucial to addressing these challenges and fostering a more informed and confident patient population.
Anesthesia, a critical facet of modern medical care, plays a pivotal role in ensuring patient comfort and safety during surgical procedures. The administration of anesthesia involves a careful balance of pharmacological agents to induce a reversible loss of sensation and consciousness, making it a complex and crucial component of the perioperative process. Despite its profound impact on healthcare outcomes, public awareness and concerns regarding anesthesia remain underexplored, especially in the unique geographical and sociocultural context of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh [1-4].
The State of Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas, presents distinct healthcare challenges owing to its diverse topography and remote communities. The district of Kinnaur, situated in the eastern part of the state, is characterized by its rugged terrain, sparse population, and limited access to healthcare facilities. Understanding the level of awareness and concerns regarding anesthesia among the general public in this region is imperative for enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring informed decision-making [5-8].
This study aims to systematically assess the awareness and concerns regarding anesthesia among the residents of District Kinnaur. By shedding light on the knowledge gaps and potential apprehensions within the community, we aspire to contribute to the development of targeted educational programs and interventions that can enhance public understanding and alleviate any unwarranted fears associated with anesthesia.

The present study delves into the landscape of awareness and concerns regarding anesthesia among the populace of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, offering a unique perspective considering the distinctive geographical and sociocultural nuances of this region.
A commendable majority of participants showcased a solid grasp of knowledge concerning anesthesia, with 65.5% exhibiting either very good or good knowledge scores. This suggests a relatively robust baseline awareness within the community, reflecting positively on the efficacy of healthcare education and awareness initiatives in the region. Notably, over 83% of participants displayed a fundamental understanding of the role of anesthesia in medical procedures, indicating a foundational awareness of its significance.
Nevertheless, discernible knowledge gaps persist, particularly in areas such as awareness of different anesthesia types, potential risks and side effects, and the influence of lifestyle factors on anesthesia and recovery. These gaps underscore the necessity for targeted educational endeavors to enhance public understanding in these specific domains. This aligns with findings from previous Indian studies, where varying levels of awareness and knowledge gaps among the general population regarding anesthesia have been emphasized [1-4].
A significant aspect illuminated by the study is the substantial concern expressed by participants regarding potential complications or adverse reactions to anesthesia. Over 64% of respondents reported being concerned about these issues, emphasizing the importance of addressing anxieties and fears associated with anesthesia to ensure a more positive patient experience. This concern mirrors findings from studies conducted in rural West Bengal and other parts of India, underscoring the universality of such apprehensions [5].
