iarjmsIARJMSIARJMS2708-3594https://doi.org/10.47310/iarjms.2021.v02i02.024Comparison of Pattern of Presentation between Benign and Malignant Breast Cancer Cases at Tertiary Care HospitalNaveenThakurManjitSehgalBackground: A review of literature on breast disorders in our environment shows that more attention is devoted to the histo-pathological characteristics of the lesion with little discussion of the clinical perspectives. The present study was done to characterize the pattern of presentation between benign and malignant breast cancer cases at tertiary care hospital. Material and methods: Present study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery and Radio diagnosis IGMC Shimla from 1st July 2018 to 30 June 2019. A total of 60 were included and evaluated in the present study. These patients were divided into two groups. Group (A) included 30 patients with biopsy proven carcinoma of the breast while Group (B) included 30 patients with benign breast lesions or pain breast. Results: The mean age of patients presenting in Group A was 55.4±10.9 years and the mean age of the patients presenting in Group B was 54±9.84years respectively. In group A, maximum 12 patients were in the age group of 40-50 years followed by 9 patients in age group of 51-60 years. Also in group B, maximum 16 patients were in the age group of 40-50 years followed by 8 in age group of 51-60 years. In group A of 30 patients, 28 patients complained of breast lump, 1 patient presented with nipple discharge and 1 patient was subjected for screening mammography. In Group B of 30 patients, 10 presented with complaints of breast lump, 15 patients presented with breast pain, 5 patients were subjected for screening mammography. In Group A, majority i.e.15 of patients 15 were in BMI between18.5-25 kg/m2 (Normal), 11 were overweight, 3 were obese and 1 was underweight whereas in Group B majority i.e. 17 patients had BMI between 18.5-25 kg/m2 (Normal) and 13 were overweight. Conclusion: The most common presenting complaint in both malignant breast cancer patients was breast lump while in benign breast disease it was pain in breasts. Almost half of the patients in both groups were had normal BMI and mostly between 40-50 years age group.
