Morphologically, it is a vertical tear in anal mucosa distal to dentate line mostly found in the posterior midline. Sphincter hypertonia and local ischemia is supposed to be the pathology behind causation of anal fissures consequent upon passage of hard stool. Aim: The aim of the present study is to determine the prevalence and clinical presentation of patients of fissure-in-Ano in a teaching government hospital. Materials and Methods: This study is a prospective study conducted at Patna Medical College Hospital, an 1800 bedded government hospital of Bihar India. Patients with Fissure in Ano admitted or examined as outpatient were randomly selected in this study. The diagnosis was made on the basis of Anorectal examination which included inspection, digital rectal examination and proctoscopic examination. Results: Our study found out that out of the 680 patients with Anorectal ailments, 190 patients (27.9%) were having anal fissures. Out of them, 125 were males and 65 were females, majority were under 40 years age. Pain during defecation, bleeding and constipation were reported as the common clinical symptoms. 77.3% of patients with fissure-in-Ano had an acute presentation and the most common location was reported to be posterior midline (90.5%). Conclusion: Our study reveals that fissure-in-Ano is a common proctologic disease attending government hospital’s surgery department. Main presentation is pain and burning Lifestyle modification plays a major role in prevention of this disease but results in early cure of this condition. Avoiding constipation, consuming high fifer diet are the principal methods to keep this painful condition away.&amp;nbsp;</abstract></article-meta></front><body /><back /></article>
