Abstract
All men and Women are given equal rights and freedoms by the Constitution of India and yet, there is still discriminatory attitude towards women. They are subjected to different types of discrimination and violence. Their rights and freedom are often violated and supressed in almost all walks of life. Even today, Indian society is strongly influenced by the patriarchal norm. It is a male dominated society which strongly hold the attitudes that men have the right to control women's behaviour and have an authority over women. Several types of violence inflicted on women are often justified on account of this gender norm. In spite of several constitutional provisions for women to safeguard their rights and liberties, women continued to suffer several types of discrimination and harassment as a result of - lack of awareness in a society, traditional attitudes and customary practices, inadequate policing and judicial practices. This paper is stressed on various types of discrimination and violence faced by women and an urgent need to stop them.
